Real Madrid suffer setback as Carvajal faces months out after knee surgery

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is facing a lengthy spell out after undergoing surgery on his right knee following Sunday’s El Clasico win over Barcelona, Afrosport reports.

Carvajal, who came on as a late substitute in the 2–1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, reported discomfort after the match. Tests later revealed damage to his right knee, requiring surgery.

The 33-year-old Spaniard underwent an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday, with reports suggesting he could be sidelined for up to three months.

A club statement read: “Our captain, Dani Carvajal, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. The operation was performed by Dr Manuel Leyes under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical team. Carvajal will begin his recovery program in the coming days.”

The injury comes just weeks after Carvajal returned from a calf problem and raises concerns about his long-term fitness, having previously struggled with issues in the same knee.

The full back was involved in a heated exchange with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal after full-time, which saw players and staff step in to diffuse tensions.

His absence is another blow for Madrid, who are already dealing with a demanding run of fixtures. Trent Alexander-Arnold, recently back from a muscle injury, is expected to fill in at right-back, with Federico Valverde providing additional cover.

Madrid’s win over Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to five points. However, losing their captain again gives Xabi Alonso another challenge ahead of a busy winter schedule that includes league, cup and Champions League fixtures.

Los Blancos host Valencia on Saturday before visiting Liverpool on 4 November, followed by a league trip to Rayo Vallecano before the international break.
