A Real Oviedo supporter is set to be fined €4,000 after allegedly directing racist abuse at Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford during a La Liga match, Afrosport reports.
The incident is said to have taken place during Barcelona’s 3–1 win away to Oviedo on 25 September, where Rashford provided an assist.
Spain’s anti-violence commission recommended the fine after La Liga reviewed social media footage showing the fan using a racial slur. A complaint was filed with the National Police, and a final decision is still pending.
La Liga said footage from stadium cameras helped identify the supporter, with further action dependent on the outcome of criminal proceedings.
An official statement read: “La Liga detected the images on social media and filed a complaint with the National Police. “Subsequently, analysis of footage from the stadium’s Organizational Control Unit (UCO) cameras allowed for the identification of the alleged perpetrator.
“The processing of this proposal will be contingent upon the final decisions made in the criminal proceedings.”
Rashford has faced repeated racial abuse in recent years. In 2021, a man was jailed for 10 weeks for racist remarks aimed at Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho after the Euro 2020 final. Another offender received a six-week sentence in 2022 for abusing the England forward online.
The 28-year-old has made a strong start to life in Spain since joining Barcelona on loan from Manchester United. He leads La Liga’s assist charts with five in 10 matches and has scored five goals, including four in three Champions League games. Barcelona hold an option to make his move permanent for around €32m next summer, and Rashford has hinted he would welcome a full transfer.
Rashford is expected to feature on Sunday when Barcelona host Elche, as Hansi Flick’s side look to respond after their El Clásico defeat to Real Madrid. Barça sit second in the table, five points off top spot.
