Super Falcons forward Gift Monday was on target as Washington Spirit recorded a 2-1 win over Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Sunday, Afrosport reports.
Monday was not part of the triumphant Falcons squad at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco after she was left out by head coach Justine Madugu.
The NWSL was back in action for the first time since the ending of June and Monday got things off for Washington at Audi Field in the 16th minute when she tapped in from Rosemonde Kouassi’s pass for her fifth league goal of the season in 11 games and was awarded as the Player of the Match.
The former FC Robo player is the team’s second highest goalscorer, one go behind Ashley Hatch.

Olivia Moultrie levelled for Portland in added time of the first half and it remained that way until substitute Trinity Rodman popped up with the winner in the 90th minute.
The victory moved the Spirit up to third on the NWSL standings, level on 26 points with reigning champions Orlando Pride in second while they are 10 points behind leaders Kansas City Current.
