Imo State athlete Chukwuemeka Igboanugo passed away during his boxing fight at the 2022 National Sports Festival in Delta State on Tuesday.
Igboanugo was competing in the 81kg category and he died after he was knocked out by his opponent from Anambra State with efforts to resuscitate him proving abortive.
Igboanugo was reportedly unconscious and could not get up after he was hit in the chin.
On Wednesday, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu confirmed the boxer’s death.
In another incident in Asaba, Zamfara State’s Taekwondo athlete, Daniel Otunoye ended his campaign at the 21st edition of the National Sports Festival after he collapsed before his fight.
