The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that every Nigerian athlete who secures a podium finish at the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Championships in Abeokuta will receive a cash reward, Afrosport reports.
According to the NSC, gold medalists will earn ₦1 million each, silver medalists will receive ₦750,000, while ₦500,000 will be awarded for every bronze medal won.
This incentive package was revealed from the stands by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General and Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman, Hon. Bukola Olopade, as they watched Team Nigeria deliver a relentless and inspiring performance at the championship.
Mallam Dikko commended the athletes for their exceptional talent and strong sense of national pride, stating that their dedication deserved immediate recognition and reward.
“Look at the way our athletes have been performing in this championship, you can see the commitment and dedication in their faces,” Dikko said. “We will not stop at giving our athletes every reason to want to keep representing our great country. Every medal they win will be rewarded.”
His remarks were echoed by Hon. Olopade, who stressed that prioritizing athlete welfare is crucial to sustained international success. He explained that the financial pledge by the NSC was not just a reward system, but a strategic effort to inspire performance and nurture future champions.
