Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a drop in the latest FIFA Men’s Ranking released on Thursday by the world football governing body, Afrosport reports.
The three-time African champions have slipped to 44th from 43rd in the global rankings, despite gaining 2.91 points. They, however, moved up one spot on the continent into fifth.
This drop comes despite Nigeria’s triumph at the 2025 Unity Cup in London, as well as a 1–1 draw against Russia in an international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
The Super Eagles are behind the quartet of Morocco (12th), Senegal (18th, up 1), Egypt (34th, down 2), and Algeria (36th) in the African rankings.
Reigning African champions Ivory Coast (45th) are sixth after dropping four places, while Tunisia, Cameroon (51st, down 1), Mali (54th, down 1), and South Africa (56th) make up the top ten in Africa.
Meanwhile, on the global stage, the top five retained their positions, with world champions Argentina leading the way, followed by Spain, France, England, and Brazil.
Portugal, UEFA Nations League winners, climbed a spot into sixth, having leapfrogged the Netherlands. Belgium remained in eighth position; Italy dropped out of the top ten, relinquishing their position to Germany and Croatia respectively.
Costa Rica made the biggest leap, moving 14 places upwards into 40th; Jamaica dropped seven places to 70th for the biggest fall in the rankings, with the next update set for 18 September.
