Newcastle’s Livramento faces up to eight weeks out with knee injury

Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento is expected to miss six to eight weeks after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, Afrosport reports.

The 22-year-old, who landed awkwardly after an aerial challenge, was stretchered off at St James’ Park and replaced by Jamaal Lascelles in the 77th minute.

Livramento suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during his time at Southampton in 2022, but his latest injury is reportedly not as serious as first feared. With the England international facing another spell on the sidelines, it leaves Newcastle short on fullback options.

Head coach Eddie Howe admitted it was “really distressing” to see the England international carried off, adding: “He’s such a big player for us in so many different ways – his versatility, his attitude, his quality. If we’re going to miss that for any length of time, it is going to be a huge blow.”

Livramento joins summer signings Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey on Newcastle’s treatment table. He will miss some big games, including their League Cup last 16 tie against Tottenham, Champions league encounters against Benfica and Athletic Bilbao and possibly a Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The injury also rules him out of England’s upcoming internationals: a friendly against Wales on 9 October and a World Cup qualifying fixture against Latvia on 14 October). He will also miss qualifiers against Serbia and Albania next month.
