Newcastle turn attention to Wissa after failed Ekitike pursuit

Liverpool advance talks with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Ekitike

Newcastle United have turned their attention to Brentford forward Yoane Wissa after withdrawing their chase for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, Afrosport reports.

The Magpies have been in the hunt for the 23-year-old French forward of Cameroonian heritage who scored 15 goals in Bundesliga last season, and reportedly made a £70 million bid that was rejected by Frankfurt.

Liverpool have now stepped in to pursue Ekitike as an alternative option to Alexander Isak, who Newcastle say is not for sale.

This has led to the Magpies shifting focus on DR Congo forward Wissa, who is also reportedly of interest to Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

The 28-year-old had a prolific 2024-25 season, scoring 19 goals in 35 Premier League games, making it the most prolific season in his professional career.

The deal might however be complicated as Brentford are not willing to lose Wissa and his telepathic Cameroonian partner Bryan Mbeumo, who is under the radar of Manchester United.

Both players have scored a combined 87 goals in the Premier League coupled with 43 assists, and are reportedly keen for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium.
