Ndidi: Super Eagles star given major role as Besiktas reshuffle leadership

Turkish giants Besiktas have appointed Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as the club’s new vice-captain, Afrosport reports.

This comes after a statement made by the club’s board of directors on Friday, confirming that Turkey international Orkun Kokcu will serve as new captain.

A statement from Besiktas read: “With the decision of our President Serdal Island and the Board of Directors, changes have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team.

“Based on the recommendation of our technical team and the effectiveness of players on the field, Orkun Kokcu has been appointed as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as second captain.”

The club also thanked former captain Necip Uysal and vice-captain Mert Gunok for their leadership and service, while extending best wishes to Kokcu and Ndidi in their new roles.

Ndidi joined Besiktas in the summer window after eight and a half years at Leicester City, where he made 303 appearances and scored 18 goals. He has since played seven times for the Turkish club.

The new leadership team will take charge when Besiktas, currently sixth in the Turkish Super Lig with 13 points from seven matches, host Genclerbirligi on Saturday.
