NBA: Warriors to retire Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey on February 23

The Golden State Warriors will retire the No. 9 jersey worn by Andre Iguodala on 23 February against the Dallas Mavericks at Chase Center, the team announced on Tuesday night.

Iguodala, who spent eight years with Golden State across two stints, will become the seventh player in franchise history to have his jersey number retired.

The 41-year-old joins other Warriors legends like Alvin Attles (No. 16), Rick Barry (No. 24), Wilt Chamberlain (No. 13), Tom Meschery (No. 14), Chris Mullin (No. 17), and Nate Thurmond (No. 42) in the rafters at Chase Center.

He, however, becomes the first member of the infamous Warriors dynasty that won four NBA championships to receive such honour.

Warriors Co-Executive Chairman & CEO Joe Lacob said: “Andre will go down as one of the smartest, shrewdest and most unique and successful players ever to wear a Warriors uniform. We thought all of that could be true when we acquired him in 2013, but the reality—four titles, six Finals appearances, a Finals MVP—exceeded even our wildest imaginations.

“He was the perfect player and person at the perfect time for our team, and the sacrifice he made in coming off the bench in 2014 sent a message that he came here to help us do one thing: win. The proof is in the rafters, and his number belongs alongside the banners he helped us raise.”

Iguodala joined Golden State in 2013 in a three-team trade deal, helping the team reach six NBA Finals in eight years, including five straight, clinching titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

The 6-foot-6 forward won the Finals MVP in 2015, averaging 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists as the Warriors overcame the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games to end a 40-year title drought.

He played in 563 career games for Golden State—452 regular season games and 111 playoff games. He averaged 6.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 26.0 minutes per game in the regular season, and 8.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 28.5 minutes in the playoffs.

Iguodala, who called time on his career in 2023 after 19 seasons in the NBA, is one of only 11 players to win four NBA championships and an NBA Finals MVP, along with teammate Stephen Curry, as well as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, John Havlicek, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Tony Parker.

He was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2004 NBA Draft and went on to play for four teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat.
