NBA: New chapter for Westbrook as Kings land veteran guard on one-year deal

Russell Westbrook has agreed to join the Sacramento Kings on a one-year deal worth $3.6 million, Afrosport reports.

The nine-time NBA All-Star stayed poised through free agency before finalising the move, which will see him begin his 18th season in the league. Westbrook is expected to officially link up with the team later this week.

The 37-year-old brings valuable experience and depth to Sacramento’s backcourt after the Kings struggled for bench production last season, ranking near the bottom in both points and assists off the bench.

Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 75 appearances for the Denver Nuggets last season, while shooting 44.9% from the field — including a career-best 52% on two-pointers.

The 2017 NBA MVP is the league’s all-time leader in triple-doubles (203) and is closing in on several historic milestones. He needs 506 points to surpass Oscar Robertson as the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history, and 75 assists to join the elite list of players with 10,000 career assists.

Westbrook, who left Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, will now suit up for his seventh NBA team following spells with the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver.
