Reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez underwent surgery on his right shoulder in Madrid on Monday following his crash with Marco Bezzecchi at the Indonesian Grand Prix, Afrosport reports.
The Ducati rider was taken out on the opening lap of last weekend’s race in Mandalika when Aprilia’s Bezzecchi ran into the back of his bike.
It left Marquez with a fracture in his shoulder and ligament damage. It was initially suggested the 32-year-old Spaniard did not require surgery, however a second evaluation saw the need to enhance his recovery.
“After a checkup for his right shoulder blade injury, Marc Marquez has undergone a successful operation at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, Spain, read a Ducati statement.
“The same medical team who had examined him seven days earlier found that the coracoid fracture and ligament damage were not showing sufficient signs of stabilisation after a week of being immobilised.
“Therefore, given the risk of residual instability, it was decided to go ahead with surgical stabilisation and repair the acromioclavicular ligaments.
“Marc Marquez, who is already at home, will continue his recovery process, and his progress will determine the timing of his return to racing competition.”

Marquez has been ruled out for the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix but could return for the Portuguese Grand Prix at the earliest.
It is however yet to be seen if he will opt out of competing at any race this season having clinched a seventh premier class title that tied him with Italian legend Valentino Rossi.
