‘Mbappe belongs to past’ – Enrique eyes PSG victory over Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique says Kylian Mbappe belongs to the past as the latter prepares to face his former team as a Real Madrid player in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.

Mbappe was on the books of PSG between 2017 and 2024, scoring 256  goals, providing 110 assists in 308 competitive appearances and winning 15 domestic titles before joining Los Blancos on a free transfer last summer.

The 26-year-old has battled with acute gastroenteritis during the course of the Club World Cup but could be set to start against his former employers in East Rutherford.

His name has dominated the build-up to this fixture, but Enrique is looking to get the win over Xabi Alonso’s team.

“All I can say is that belongs in the past, it is behind us now,” the Spaniard said.

“Lots of things make this a special game. This game is important because it is a Club World Cup semi-final. That makes it very interesting, and we need to be ready to remain focused on the match.

“We are very close to playing another final, and that is a true motivation.

“I think it’s very difficult to analyse Real Madrid because Xabi Alonso is just starting his work there.

“For me, it has always been a pleasure to play against Real Madrid, and it always will be.

“They are the most decorated club in the world, and Xabi has everything required to take on the challenge.”

PSG will meet Chelsea in the final at MetLife Stadium if they defeat Real Madrid, and could make it five titles this season, having won the Trophee des Champions, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and UEFA Champions League.
