Man United reportedly close on hiring Solskjaer, Carrick as interim coach

Manchester United are close to hiring former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season, Afrosport reports.

This comes on the back of the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday after 14 months in charge.

Darren Fletcher is currently the caretaker boss and oversaw Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley. He will also oversee this weekend’s FA Cup third round tie with Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to reports, Solskjaer and Carrick have held discussions with United sporting director Jason Wilcox and could both work together on the Old Trafford dugout until a permanent head coach is found at the end of the season.

Should the move be finalised, it will mark a return for Solskjaer, who was interim manager after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho in December 2018, before he was appointed permanently in March 2019.

The Norwegian guided United to back-to-back top four finishes and the Europa League final, with his reign lasting until November 2021, after which Carrick, who was a member of his backroom staff, took charge of the team on a caretaker basis until the arrival of Ralf Rangnick on the interim.

Since leaving Old Trafford, Solskjaer managed Turkish giants Besiktas for eight months in 2025 while Carrick was at the helm of affairs at Middlesbrough for between October 2022 and June 2025.
