Harry Maguire emerged as the hero as Manchester United claimed their biggest win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, Afrosport reports.
The Red Devils got off to a blistering start, with Bryan Mbeumo firing them ahead after just 62 seconds. The Cameroonian latched onto a pass from Amad Diallo before placing a one-time finish past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Liverpool grew into the game and came agonisingly close to scoring the equaliser. However, the woodwork denied Cody Gakpo’s curling effort into the far post after a brilliant pass from Mohamed Salah.
United should have doubled their lead at the other end, but Bruno Fernandes clipped the outside of the post with his right-footed strike from the edge of the box.
The first half was filled with end-to-end action, and Liverpool were denied once again by the woodwork as Gakpo’s deflected cross hit the top of the crossbar. Alexander Isak should have definitely levelled proceedings for the host, but the Swede was denied by a fantastic save from goalkeeper Semme Lammens.
Liverpool started the second half with real intent and came close to getting a goal but were denied by the upright once again following a strike from Gakpo.
After several attempts at probing, Liverpool finally got on the scoresheet, with Gakpo scoring the leveller in the 78th minute. The Dutchman tapped the ball into an empty from a Federico Chiesa low cross.
However, United responded just six minutes later, restoring their lead through a thumping header from Harry Maguire, who finished off an inviting cross from Fernandes.

Liverpool piled the pressure on United in the latter stages but the visitors held firm, with Maguire’s goal turning out to be the winner.
The result ended United’s winless streak at Anfield in the Premier League, dating back to January 2026 under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils also won back-to-back league games for the first time under Ruben Amorim and moved into ninth in the table with 13 points.
Liverpool, meanwhile, lost a fourth consecutive game for the first time since 2014. Arne Slot’s men dropped into fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
