Lyon win appeal against relegation, to continue in Ligue 1 next season

Lyon handed provisional relegation to Ligue 2

Lyon on Wednesday were successful in their appeal against relegation to Ligue 2, Afrosport reports.

The French side were provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 last November due to financial problems. The decision was then upheld last month by the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), the body that controls the financial status of French teams.

Lyon had agreed to forfeit their Europa League spot if their relegation was upheld, but having secured a successful appeal, they will retain their spot in Europa next season.

The seven-time French champions welcomed the decision of the appeal board on Wednesday.

A statement from the club read: “Olympique Lyonnais welcomes the decision to keep the club in Ligue 1.

“OL thanks the appeal committee for having recognised the ambition of the club’s new management, determined to ensure serious management in the future.

“Today’s decision is the first step in restoring confidence in Olympique Lyonnais. We can now focus our attention on sporting goals, fully preparing for next season.”

With Lyon retaining their Europa League place, it is left to see whether UEFA will allow Premier League side Crystal Palace participate in the competition next season due to the body’s multi-club ownership regulations.
