The 39-year-old moved to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in a reported £30 million deal in 2012. He announced his departure from Santiago Bernabeu in May and exits the club after 13 seasons and 28 trophies won.
Modric leaves as Madrid’s most successful player, having won four La Liga titles, six Champions Leagues, six Club World Cups, and five UEFA Super Cups, among others.
His last appearance for Los Blancos was at the Club World Cup in the United States, featuring in their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
The Croatia international made over 590 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 43 goals and providing 95 assists, none more famous than his stoppage-time corner kick in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner joins a Milan side, who recently sacked head coach Sergio Conceicao after a tumultuous season, where they finished eighth in the Serie A and missed out on qualification for European football.
The Rossoneri, meanwhile, have rehired former boss Massimiliano Allegri, who led them to league triumph in 2011. He was instrumental in getting Modric to join the club as they continue their rebuilding towards returning to the top after last winning the league in 2021-22.
Modric will wear the number 14 shirt at Milan—the same number he wore at Tottenham and in his early days at Madrid—most recently worn by Tijjani Reijnders, who left the club to join Manchester City.
