Liverpool approach Newcastle over Isak in potential British transfer record

Liverpool have made an approach to Newcastle United over striker Alexander Isak in what could potentially be a British transfer record, Afrosport reports.

The Reds have already spent big in the ongoing summer transfer window, acquiring Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili for almost £200 million this summer. More than half of the fee is on Wirtz who cost a club record £116 million.

The Merseyside outfit are however not done yet in their quest to strengthen as head coach Arne Slot opts for a centre forward following the death of Diogo Jota and the potential exit of Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are ready to table a bid of £120 million, which would make Isak the most expensive player in the history of British football, eclipsing the £107 million Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.

It would also take Liverpool’s spending in excess of £300 million, making them the outright biggest spenders this summer, not only in England, but in Europe.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and has established himself as one of the most prolific players in the Premier League with 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 competitive appearances.

He netted 27 goals during the 2024-25 season as the Magpies ended their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the EFL Cup, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley.
