Lionel Messi claims MLS Player of the Month award for July after hot streak

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has been named Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Month for July, Afrosport reports.

The 38-year-old scored eight goals and provided three assists in five matches in the month of July, leading Inter Miami to four wins, one draw, and one loss in six matches since their return from the Club World Cup.

Messi has netted six braces in his last seven MLS appearances dating back to 28 May and has failed to register a goal contribution in just one of his last eight games. He has 18 league goals this season and is tied with Nashville’s Sam Surridge in the race for the MLS Golden Boot.

The former Barcelona man picks up his second Player of the Month award this season, having also won it in May. He has now won the accolade four times since moving to MLS in 2023 and is tied for the sixth-most in league history – Chris Wondolowski (seven), Landon Donovan (six), Josef Martínez (six), Carlos Ruiz (six), and Luciano Acosta (five).

Inter Miami are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference but have the eighth-best record in MLS this campaign, with 42 points from 22 matches. Their current form puts them back in contention for the Supporters’ Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.

The Herons are in action on Wednesday, kicking off their 2025 Leagues Cup campaign at home to Mexican side Atlas at Chase Stadium.
