Levy steps down as Tottenham chairman after 24 years

Daniel Levy has stepped down from his role as Tottenham Hotspur chairman with immediate effect, bringing to an end his 24-year association with the North London club, Afrosport reports.

Tottenham confirmed in a statement that there would be no changes to its ownership or shareholder structure while stressing that recent appointments such as Thomas Frank as head coach and Vinai Venkatesham as CEO, were all part of the club’s long-term succession plan.

Peter Charrington has been appointed as non-executive chairman having been a non-executive director since March.

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees,” Levy said in a club statement.

“We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community.

“I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

Levy replaced Alan Sugar as Spurs chairman in February 2001 and transformed the club on and off the pitch in terms of player recruitment, having purchased players like Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Dimitar Berbatov, who were later sold for big profit.

He also made Tottenham become a financial powerhouse, with a current valuation of $3.3 billion, which ranks them as the ninth most valuable football club in the world per Forbes.

On the trophy front, the Lilywhites won the 2008 EFL Cup but had to wait another 17 years before lifting another piece of silverware by winning the Europa League in May.

They also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and finished a close second in the Premier League in 2017.
