Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has pointed out that Bundesliga clubs cannot compete with sides from the Premier League due to financial resources at their disposal, Afrosport reports.
The German top flight has seen a number of its top players move to England this summer, notably Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, with the Reds also purchasing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons have moved from RB Leipzig to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, while Nick Woltemade is on the verge of joining Newcastle United from Stuttgart.
Kompany, when speaking to the press on Friday, said it was difficult for Bundesliga clubs to hold on to their best players because Premier League clubs are benefiting from TV revenue, which is worth £6.7 billion for the next four years, while German clubs will share £3.2 billion within the same period.
“The truth is, I remember going with Burnley to the Premier League. All of a sudden, you have TV money coming in and it’s 100 million (pounds) for promoted teams,” the Belgian tactician said.
“So, you go from a budget of 20-25 million to 120 or 130 million, which in the Bundesliga you would compete with the top six, top eight.
“When Sunderland is buying players, they are buying from Leverkusen, and they are competing with AC Milan. That’s the financial reality. It is the nature of what they have been able to develop over many years, especially with the TV money.”
He added: “It is a debate for the Bundesliga to find a way to remain competitive. All the players going to the Premier League it is not that they had 5-6 years of being top players in the Bundesliga.
“They had one or two years. So, we will have new players coming. There won’t be a lack of quality, but to keep the best players, it is a German Bundesliga discussion.”
