Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet shattered the world record to win the women’s 5000m event at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
Chebet, who also set a meet record, clocked a time of 13:58.06, becoming the first woman in history to run under 14 minutes on track in the 5000m race.
The 25-year-old, a double gold medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, broke the previous record set by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, who ran a time of 14:00.21.
Chebet beat compatriot Agnes Ngetich, who finished second in a personal best of 14:01.29, while Tsegay ran a season’s best 14:04.41 to finish third.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Tsige Duguma won the women’s 800m in a personal best 1:57.10.
She finished ahead of South African and World Indoor Champion Prudence Sekgodiso, ran a personal best of 1:57.16 to finish in second place, while Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi ran 1:57.89 to come third.
