Ons Jabeur: Tunisian star announces indefinite break from tennis

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur has announced that she is taking an indefinite break from competitive tennis, Afrosport reports.

The 30-year-old Tunisian Jabeur has struggled for form in recent times and has failed to go past the third round in the three tennis major tournaments this year.

Her most recent exit came in the first round at Wimbledon, where she is a two-time finalist, retiring against Viktoriya Tomova after a lengthy medical timeout.

Jabeur, a former world number two, dealt with breathing difficulties during the Australian Open as she lives with asthma, and in a social media post, stated her unhappiness on the court which is promoting her to take a back seat.

“For the past two years, I’ve been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges. But deep down, I haven’t truly felt happy on the court for some time now,” read a statement on her X handle.

“Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel it’s time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living.

“Thank you to all my fans for understanding. Your support and love mean the world to me. I carry it with me always.

“Even while I’m away from the court, I’ll continue to stay close and connected in different ways, and share this journey with you all.”

It is not certain when Jabeur intends to return but a prolonged absence could see her fall further down the WTA rankings as she currently sits in 71st place.
