Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from this month’s US Open, organisers announced on Thursday.
The former world No. 6 has not played since his first-round exit at Wimbledon in June, where he fell to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in a five-set battle.
Earlier this year, the 29-year-old also missed the French Open due to a right oblique injury and has now been absent from seven Grand Slam tournaments over the past four years.
Currently ranked 59th in the world, Berrettini’s best run at the US Open came in 2019, when he reached the semi-finals. He holds a 13–11 match record this season, with his standout performance being a quarter-final appearance at the Miami Open.
His withdrawal makes him the second notable player to pull out of the New York major this week, following Grigor Dimitrov’s exit on Tuesday. American Brandon Holt takes Berrettini’s place in the main draw, while Eliot Spizzirri has been awarded Holt’s wild card.
The US Open gets underway at Flushing Meadows on 24 August and concludes on 7 September.
