Geyoro: PSG star makes history with big-money WSL move to London club

France midfielder Grace Geyoro has become the most expensive women’s footballer in history, following her £1.4 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to London City Lionesses, Afrosport reports.

The fee paid for the 28-year-old eclipses the £1.1 million Orlando Pride paid to sign Mexico’s Lizbeth Ovalle from Tigres UANL last month. It also marked the third time the transfer record has been shattered this summer.

The run of exceeding the £1 million-mark kicked off in July, when European champions Arsenal signed Canadian Olivia Smith from Liverpool – making her the first £1m signing in the history of the women’s game.

Meanwhile, Geyoro, who has been at PSG since 2012, having progressed through their youth ranks, departs the Paris club after 13 years. Since making her senior debut in October 2014, she has scored 53 goals in 270 appearances for PSG, winning the Premiere Ligue, three French Cups and reaching the UEFA Champions League final twice.

The midfielder made her international debut for France in 2017, netting 23 goals in 103 games. She has also featured in two World Cups, two European Championships, and the 2024 Olympics.

London City is run by American businesswoman Michele Kang, and Geyoro becomes their 16th permanent signing since securing promotion to the Women’s Super League (WSL). She was the club’s second major signing on Thursday’s deadline day, joining Spain’s Lucia Corrales, whose £430,000 release was triggered to bring her in from Barcelona.

The Lionesses have also brought in experienced faces like Jana Fernandez (Barcelona), Danielle van de Donk (Lyon), former Manchester United captain Katie Zelem and experienced England forward Nikita Parris.

London City begin their WSL campaign away at Arsenal on Saturday, but the game comes too soon for Geyoro, who could make her debut on Sunday, 14 September, when they host Manchester United.
