Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele were on target as Paris Saint-Germain recorded a hard-fought 2-0 win over Bayern Munich with nine men to progress into the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals, Afrosport reports.
The reigning European champions got the better of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 4-0 in the round of 16 while Bayern edged past Flamengo 4-2.
Saturday’s quarter-final at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta was intense from kick off, with both sides having two shots on target each, while possession was also close, with PSG narrowly leading with 51% of the ball.
Dayot Upamecano thought he had given Bayern the lead in added time of the first half but his header from Michael Olise’s free kick was flagged for offside.
The second half started in similar fashion as both teams had a go at each other, but it was PSG who finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when Doue fired in a low shot which sent goalkeeper Manuel Neuer the wrong way.
Luis Enrique’s side were however reduced to 10 men just four minutes later when Ecuadorian centre-back William Pacho was shown a straight red card for a high challenge and Leon Goretzka.
Moments later, Harry Kane put the ball in the net but it was ruled for offside for second time in the match.
PSG were further reduced to nine men in added time when Lucas Hernandez was given a red card for an elbow on Raphael Guerreiro.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, PSG were able to add a second goal through Dembele with a clinical strike from outside the penalty area.
With just a few minutes left to end the game, Bayern were initially given a penalty but it was reversed after referee Anthony Taylor consulted with the pitch side VAR monitor.
