FIFA boss Gianni Infantino says he is “very reassured” about Mexico co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, despite the recent violence that has erupted over the killing of drug cartel leader, El Mencho, Afrosport reports.
El Mencho was killed by Mexican forces on Sunday at a ranch near the city Guadalajara, one of the World Cup host cities, located in Jalisco State.
A clash ensued between security and loyalists of El Mencho, which led to the deaths of 74 people.
It has put into question over safety in Mexico ahead of the World Cup but Infantino speaking in the Colombian city of Barranquilla said: “Very reassured, everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular.”
Mexico will host the World Cup along with Canada and the United States. The cities of Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara will host matches.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has assured that the violence posed no risk to World Cup fans while Jalisco State Governor Pablo Lemus ruled out the prospect of Guadalajara being dropped from the tournament over security concerns.
