F1: Piastri takes big championship lead after Norris’ Dutch GP DNF

Oscar Piastri took a massive lead in the Formula 1 championship by winning the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday while his McLaren teammate Lando Norris suffered a DNF due to mechanical failure, Afrosport reports.

Norris was poised to finish second behind Piastri but an oil leak on lap 64 of 72 forced him to retire while Piastri’s lead from start to finish now sees him 34 points clear of his teammate in the championship standings with nine races left on the calendar.

Home hero Max Verstappen finished in second place while Isack Hadjar claimed the first podium finish of his career by taking third for Racing Bulls.

George Russell was fourth in the Mercedes ahead of Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman in the Williams and Haas respectively while Aston Martin duo Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were seventh and eighth respectively.

Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull and the second Haas of Esteban Ocon completed the top 10.

It was a torrid day for Scuderia Ferrari at Zandvoort as both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc suffered car damage after crashing into the barriers and ultimately retired from the race.

The paddock heads next Sunday to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.
