F1: Hulkenberg gets long-awaited podium finish as Norris wins wet British GP

Nico Hulkenberg finally got his long-awaited Formula 1 podium finish after claiming third place at the British Grand Prix while Lando Norris won his home race for the very first time, Afrosport reports.

The race at Silverstone started under wet conditions which prompted a start under the safety car and use of intermediate tyres.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen started on pole position but was overtaken by the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Norris after 11 laps.

The rain intensified from lap 14 which brought out multiple yellow flags and the safety cars, and this allowed Hulkenberg to benefit immensely, having started from 19th, and rose up to third, which he maintained until the chequered flag, scoring his first F1 podium on his 239th race start. It was also the first podium for Sauber since Kamui Kobayashi’s third place finish at the 2012 Japanese Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, current championship leader Oscar Piastri finished second after serving a 10-second penalty for slowing down too much at the restart of one of the the safety car periods which allowed Norris to take his first win at Silverstone, making it the 25th occasion a British driver won his home race while he is the 13th different British driver to do so.

He has also cut the gap to Piastri in the drivers’ championship to eight points and gave McLaren their first win at Silverstone since Lewis Hamilton did in 2008.

Lance Stroll held on third place for large parts of the race in his Aston Martin but fell off and ultimately took seventh place after he was overtaken by Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who claimed fourth, while Verstappen finished fifth, making his way up from 10th after dropping out of third place following a wild spin.

Pierre Gasly came home in sixth place for Alpine while Alex Albon in the Williams, Mercedes George Russell and the other Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso completed the top 10.

The wet weather conditions saw the retirement of five rookie drivers: Kimi Antonelli, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto.
