England claimed back-to-back titles at the UEFA Women’s Euro championship after defeating Spain via penalties in Sunday’s final in Basel, Afrosport reports.
The Lionesses have had their work cut out in the knockout phase after needing penalties and extra time to get past Sweden and Italy in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
La Roja meanwhile edged past hosts Switzerland in the last eight in regular time before needing extra time to get past Germany in the last four.
The final was a rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which the Spaniards won and they were ahead in the 25th minute when Mariona Caldentey headed in Ona Batlle’s cross.
The scoreline remained in Spain’s favour until the 57th minute when Chloe Kelly’s cross found the head of Arsenal teammate Alessia Russo to equalise.
Nothing could separate the two teams for the rest of the game including extra time which ultimately forced penalties.
Despite England missing their first penalty from Bethany Mead and fourth from Leah Williamson, Spain missed three consecutive penalties via Caldentey, Aitana Bonmati and Salma Paralluelo.
This allowed Kelly to take England’s last penalty which she duly converted for a 3-1 shootout victory.

The tournament triumph is a second for England in their history and the third in a row for manager Sarina Wiegman, who lifted the title with her home country, the Netherlands in 2017.
