EFL Cup: Grimsby Town fined for fielding ineligible player against Man United

League Two side Grimsby Town have been fined £20,000 for fielding an ineligible player in their EFL Cup second round win over Manchester United last week, Afrosport reports.

The Mariners triumphed 12-11 on penalties after the game at Blundell Park ended 2-2 in regular time.

They have however been fined for featuring midfielder Clarke Oduor, who joined on loan from Bradford City a day before the game but was registered two minutes after the required deadline.

Oduor came on in the 73rd minute for George McEachran and had his penalty saved by Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana in the shootout.

The EFL in a statement said Grimsby reported the incident themselves which the governing body of English football’s lower tiers acknowledging it was not deliberate and with no intention to deceive or mislead.

Grimsby will however pay a £10,000 fine with the remaining £10,000 suspended until the end of the season.

Accord to BBC Sport, Manchester United are aware of the situation have until Monday to appeal the EFL’s decision.

Grimsby will next face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the third round after the September international break.
