Done Deal: Zubimendi joins Arsenal in €65m deal from Real Sociedad

Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal worth €65 million, Afrosport reports.

Zubimendi has signed a five-year contract until 2030 with the Gunners, who reached an agreement for his transfer in March.

He becomes the second signing through the door at the Emirates Stadium this summer, joining fellow Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined Arsenal last week in a £5m move from Chelsea.

“This is a huge moment in my career,” said Zubimendi. “It’s the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.

“I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.”

The 26-year-old started his career at Sociedad’s youth ranks before making his senior team debut in April 2019. He has 236 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga club, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists.

He helped the team win the Copa del Rey title in 2019-20 and was instrumental in helping them secure Champions League football when they finished fourth in the 2022-23 season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Zubimendi’s qualities and expressed his delight at finally getting his midfield target.

He said: “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.

“The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.”

Zubimendi made his international debut for Spain in June 2021 and has since played 19 times and scored two goals for La Roja. He was part of the Spanish team that won the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024.

He scored in their defeat to Portugal in the Nations League final in June and also won a silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, playing in all five games for Spain.

The Spaniard will wear the number 36 shirt at Arsenal ahead of the new season.
