Dele-Bashiru to miss Nigeria’s October qualifiers after Lazio injury setback

Lazio have confirmed that Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has suffered a hamstring injury following Sunday’s Derby della Capitale, Afrosport reports.

The 24-year-old lasted just 14 minutes in the clash against Roma before being forced off and replaced by Reda Belahyane at the Stadio Olimpico.

Medical assessments carried out have now revealed the extent of the problem, with Lazio confirming that the midfielder has sustained a lesion to the femoral bicep in his right leg.

Dele-Bashiru is expected to be sidelined for around a month, joining Matias Vecino and Nicolo Rovella on the Italian club’s growing injury list.

The injury also rules the former Manchester City man out of Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and the Republic of Benin during the October international window.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle faces a dilemma ahead of the games, with Dele-Bashiru’s absence adding to Ola Aina’s unavailability following a hamstring injury he picked up while playing for Nigeria. Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen also recently returned to training and is still recovering from an ankle injury.

Nigeria are six points adrift of South Africa in the group standings and will be hoping Bafana Bafana drop points in the next international break to keep their campaign alive.
