Childhood club of Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva dedicate new kit in their honour

Diogo Jota: Tributes pour in following demise of Liverpool forward

Gondomar SC, the childhood club of deceased Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, have dedicated their kit for the new season in their honour, Afrosport reports.

The brothers died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, which sent the football world into a state of mourning.

Jota’s club, Liverpool, have already taken some initiatives to honour him by retiring his number 20 jersey, while the rest of his wages in his contract that runs until 2027 will be paid to his family.

His youth career started at Gondomar SC in 2005, while his brother Andre started there three years later. Both players grew up in the eponymous town on the outskirts of Porto.

The Portuguese fourth-tier outfit will now honour them with pictures of the brothers printed on the front of their jersey for the new season, while their names will appear at the top of the back of the shirts.

“More than a jersey, a tribute eternal. Because football is more than victories and goals, it’s legacy, its family, it’s love for our land,” Gondomar SC said in a social media post.

“Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football.

“Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it’s like stepping on the field with them.”

Meanwhile, Andre Silva played for Gondomar and Penafiel at senior level, making a total of 105 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists.
