Chelsea charged with 74 rule breaches involving football agents

The Football Association have charged Chelsea with 74 rule breaches related to payments to football agents between 2009 and 2022 when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich owned the club, Afrosport reports.

The breaches involve Chelsea’s dealings with agents, intermediaries and third-party investments particularly between the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons.

Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly in 2022 in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and could now face a number of sanctions including a fine, transfer embargo or points deduction.

“During a thorough due diligence process prior to completion of the purchase, the ownership group became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions and other potential breaches of FA rules,” the club said in a statement.

“Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including the FA.

“The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the club’s files and historical data.”

The West London outfit were fined £8.6 million by European football governing body UEFA in July 2023 for breaking Financial Fair Play rules after providing incomplete financial information between 2012 and 2019.
