CHAN 2024: Uganda finish top of Group C after six-goal epic with South Africa

Co-hosts of the 2024 African Nations Championship, Uganda clinched top spot in Group C following an epic 3-3 draw with South Africa in Kampala on Monday, Afrosport reports.

Just one point separated the Cranes and Bafana Bafana going into the game meaning the battle for top spot and second place was intense.

Jude Ssemugabi put the Ugandans ahead in the 31st minute but the South Africans staged a comeback in the second half with Ramahiwe Mphahlele, Thabiso Kutumela and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo giving them a 3-1 lead.

The lead was however temporary as Uganda responded with Allan Okello and Rogers Torach converting two late penalties in the 88th minute and added time to level the game.

The CHAN 2024 co-hosts finished ahead of 2022 runners-up, Algeria who played out a goalless draw with Niger in the other simultaneous match.

South Africa settled for third place, Guinea fourth and the Nigeriens last.
