Co-hosts of the 2024 African Nations Championship, Kenya, got off to a fine start after getting the better of DR Congo with a 1-0 Group A win in Nairobi on Sunday, Afrosport reports.
The Harambee Stars were making their tournament debut by virtue of being co-hosts along with East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.
Meanwhile, the Leopards were making their seventh appearance in the tournament, missing only one outing in 2018 in Morocco. They are also the joint-most successful team with two titles along with the Moroccans.
The Congolese thought they were ahead in the 27th minute when Japhte Kitambala scored. It was however ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build up.
That missed opportunity played into the hands of the Kenyans as Austine Odhiambo broke the deadlock in added time of the first half.
