CHAN 2024: CAF postpones tournament to August 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the dates for the postponed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals, Afrosport reports.

The African football body has revealed that the CHAN tournament will now take place from 2 August to 30 August 2025.

The eighth edition of the tournament, which is to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, was initially scheduled to take place in February 2025 but had been postponed due to infrastructural and logistic challenges.

The new date for the competition was confirmed during the CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Monday in Rabat, Morocco, under the chairmanship of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe.

The CHAN tournament is reserved for players plying their trades in their domestic leagues, and Senegal are the defending champions, having won the last edition held in Algeria.

The CAF Executive Committee also made decisions on some other upcoming competitions, with the inaugural Women’s Futsal Africa Cup of Nations set to be held in Morocco from 22-30 April 2025.

The finalists from the competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup to be held in the Philippines later in the year.

A new format was also approved for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the number of participating teams increased from 12 to 16.

The Executive Committee also agreed to open the bidding process for hosting future competitions, including the Women’s Champions League (2005, 2026 & 2027), U-17 AFCON (2026, 2027 & 2028), and U-20 AFCON (2027, 2029 & 2031).
