Brighton boss Hurzeler tips Welbeck for England call-up

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has tipped Danny Welbeck for a recall to the England national team, Afrosport reports.

The 34-yeaar-old of Ghanaian heritage, has been impressive for the Seagulls this season, scoring six goals in 10 Premier League games, his latest in Saturday’s 3-0 win against newly-promoted Leeds United.

It has led to calls for Welbeck to be recalled back to the England squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Serbia. He has 16 goals in 42 caps for the Three Lions, but last featured in a 1-0 friendly win over Switzerland in September 2018.

Hurzeler, speaking after win against Leeds said it would not be a surprise to see Welbeck included in the squad.

“I wouldn’t be surprised, but I don’t know. I’m impressed by his actions as a leader, by being a role model for the young players,” he stated.

“That is what is impressive for me, that he’s a great connector. He is an unbelievable role model but as a striker I’m not surprised because he shows it week by week, day by day.

“He is not only a great goal scorer, he also works hard for the team. And then you get the rewards.”

Another player that has impressed for Brighton this season is Gambia winger Yankuba Minteh who provided the assist for the third goal scored by Diego Gomez.

Hurzeler believes there is still more to come from the former Newcastle United player.

“I think we can go through all the individuals now, but the main thing is you will only develop as a player when you are successful as a team, when you work hard as a team. Then the player will shine,” the German tactician added.

“Now we have to keep pushing and focus on trying to get a very stable performance week after week. And then I’m sure that with the players we have there is the potential to grow.”

Brighton are 10th in the Premier League standings and will next travel to London to play Crystal Palace.
