Amorim praises Amad Diallo’s defensive display in Man United win over Sunderland

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has praised the defensive performance of Amad Diallo in Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford, Afrosport reports.

The Ivory Coast international returned to the starting XI after missing the previous game against Brentford due to the loss of a family member with the club giving him time off.

Amad started against the Black Cats, with whom he spent time on loan during the 2022-23 season in the EFL Championship, at right wing-back, and was also efficient offensively.

“Really pleased, really pleased. I think he defended really well,” Amorim said.

“Attacking, we already know that he’s really good. Every time he has the ball one against one, he’s giving us a lot of chances to score.

“He can help Bryan to play more inside and worry more with the runs behind the defenders. We miss a lot Amad against Brentford, especially when we’re [in the] second half, 2-1, to have an extra guy like Amad, it’s massive. So, we are really pleased with him. He did a very good job.”

Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens also made his debut for the club since his signing on transfer deadline day from Royal Antwerp. He put in a solid display which earned the praise of fans and pundits.

Amorim however stated that the 23-year-old still needs help from his teammates to settle in well.

“I think Senne did a great job and gave us confidence. It was a good day, not a perfect day, but to win like this with a clean sheet is important for our team,” the Portuguese tactician added.

“We need to understand that we need everyone to be ready to play. It’s a long season, we have a lot of problems, anything can happen. The important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens a lot to have a very good performance.”

United are 10th on the Premier League, six points away from leaders Arsenal and four points away from the top four.

They will next travel to Anfield to take on fierce rivals Liverpool after the international break.
