Team Nigeria won two gold medals on Thursday in the badminton event at the ongoing maiden African School Games in Algeria, bringing their total in the sport to six medals, Afrosport reports.
Precious Adekunle claimed the first gold in the girls’ singles final with a commanding win over her Egyptian opponent, while Edun David secured the second gold in the boys’ singles.
Nigeria also earned three silver medals. The Adekunle sisters, Precious and Cynthia, fought hard in the girls’ doubles final but had to settle for silver. Edun David returned to the court alongside Cynthia Adekunle in the mixed doubles final, where the pair also claimed silver after an impressive outing.
In the mixed team event, Ahmed Ayatulla and Masibau Faisat reached the semifinals against Tunisia. Nigeria won the boys’ match, but Tunisia took the girls’ and doubles matches, handing Nigeria a 2-1 defeat and the bronze medal.
So far, Team Nigeria has a total of eight medals from four sports, two gold, four silver, and two bronze. With the badminton event concluded, attention now shifts to athletics, which gets underway on Friday, August 1st.
