AFCON 2025 qualifiers: Super Eagles boss Eguavoen targets finishing series unbeaten

AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Why the odds favour Eguavoen against Gernot Rohr

Super Eagles interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen is targeting finishing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers unbeaten as his side prepare to take on Rwanda in Uyo on Monday, Afrosport reports.

Nigeria were through to next year’s AFCON finals in Morocco after Rwanda failed to get a result over Libya in the previous round.

This meant the game against Benin in Abidjan was a formality but the AFCON 2023 runners-up still managed to get a point in the game to keep their unbeaten run in the qualifiers with three wins and two draws.

Now Eguavoen wants to ensure his team end the qualifiers on a high in front of their supporters.

“Coming into this game, we haven’t lost a game. So we have to maintain that standard and try to win the game, worst case scenario draw,” the ex-international said ahead of the game.

“We want to qualify without losing a game, and we know we’re capable of [that]. We have all the qualities whatever it takes to beat anybody any time. Then it was more under pressure, but we didn’t look at that.

“Nigeria is a team that is respected, almost won the Afcon the last time, so we have to maintain that standard.”

The future of Eguavoen as head coach remains unclear after the AFCON qualifiers, with the next set of competitive games coming in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers during the March international break next year.
