AFCON 2023: Ghana fan arrested for attacking Hughton after defeat to Cape Verde

Ghana supporters were far from happy after the Black Stars started their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday.

Garry Rodrigues’ 92nd-minute goal secured all three points for the Blue Sharks after Alexander Djiku cancelled out Jamiro Monteiro’s first-half opener.

The defeat left Ghanaians frustrated back at home and at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, and a fan was arrested after attacking Hughton at the team’s hotel after the game.

The former Norwich City boss was also reported to be a subject of verbal abuse from various fans.

Ghanaian journalist Saddick Adams confirmed the incident and arrest on X social platform on Monday.

He said: “One member of the Ghanaian supporters in Abidjan has been arrested for an attack on coach Chris Hughton at the team’s hotel. It took the intervention of some Ghanaian diplomats who were around to save the coach. The unidentified man has been handed to the Ivorian Police.”

Ghana will face Egypt for their next Group B game on Thursday with the hopes of grabbing their fifth win since the appointment of Hughton at the helm.
