F1: Mercedes confirm Russell, Antonelli as driver line-up for 2026

Mercedes have confirmed George Russell and Kimi Antonelli as the driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season after signing contract extensions, Afrosport reports.

Russell’s existing deal was set to run out at the end of the year likewise rookie Antonelli, who replaced Lewis Hamilton. Both drivers are now going to be part of the grid next year when new technical regulations kick in.

Russell’s contract is believed to be multi-year, meaning he will remain with Mercedes for the foreseeable future. He has already put in some standout performances this year, winning the Canadian and Singapore Grand Prix, and standing on the podium eight times which sees him sit fourth in the drivers’ championship.

Antonelli, meanwhile, has not had a smooth start to life in F1 as a rookie with three DNFs, but was on the podium in Canada and has finished in the points 10 times and is seventh in the standings.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, speaking on the contract extensions of the drivers said: “Confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if.

“We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly and make sure everyone, on all sides, was happy. I’m pleased we have done that.

“George and Kimi have proved a strong pairing and we’re excited to continue our journey together.

“Our focus is now on the final six races of the year, as we fight for second in the Constructors’, and onwards to 2026 and a new era in F1.”

The F1 paddock heads to Austin for the United States Grand Prix this weekend to start off the leg of races in the Americas that includes Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Las Vegas.
