AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Dele-Bashiru scores as Nigeria edge Libya in Uyo

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scored the only goal as the Super Eagles of Nigeria pipped the Mediterranean Knights of Libya 1-0 on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture, Afrosport reports.

The Lazio midfielder who came on as a substitute for Alex Iwobi hit the target after Moses Simon’s well-worked assist in the 86h minute.

Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman thought he had broken the deadlock when he put the ball beyond the Libya goalkeeper in the 83rd minute after receiving a pass from Raphael Onyedika, but he was adjudged to be in an offside position.

Victory takes the three-time African champions to seven points in Group D and put them in good shape ahead of Tuesday’s return leg.

The Super Eagles had a below-par first half where the only attempt at goal was Alex Iwobi’s shot from inside the box.

Captain William Troost-Ekong also had an opportunity, but he could not keep his effort on target.

A much improved second half turned things around, particularly with the introduction of Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Taiwo Awoniyi and AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was rarely tested all through with Libya coach Nasser Al-Hadiri setting his team up to defend.

Nigeria will take on Libya on Tuesday in Benina where a victory takes them through to the finals showpiece in Morocco next December.
