Parker to Potter – The 12 Premier League managers sacked in 2022-23 season

Potter leaves Chelsea after Aston Villa loss

The 2022-23 Premier League campaign continues to set records with a total of 12 coaches sacked so far by half of the 20 teams competing.

Afrosport reviews the incidents around the coaches’ exit as we countdown to the end of the campaign.

Scott Parker – Bournemouth (August 2022)

Parker was the first to be shown the exit door by Bournemouth following a poor start to the campaign with the Cherries losing their opening four matches and his departure was announced after they conceded the biggest Premier League loss with a 9-0 result against Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel – Chelsea (September 2022)

UEFA Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel was the next casualty in the English top-flight as a result of their underwhelming start to the season after a huge transfer business in the summer.

The German coach left Stamford Bridge the following day after their 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Bruno Lage – Wolverhampton Wanderers (October 2022)

Following their slip into the relegation zone in October, Wolverhampton Wanderers cut ties with Portuguese head coach Bruno Lage after spending £100m on new signings.

Lage managed to win just one of his last 15 matches at Molineux before the club decided to change the team’s hierarchy

Steven Gerrard – Aston Villa (October 2022)

Steven Gerrard did not last up to a year at Villa Park and his dismissal was confirmed after a 3-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage in October.

Aston Villa won just two and lost six of their opening 11 matches and they were hovering just above the relegation zone on goals scored.

Ralph Hasenhuttl – Southampton (November 2022)

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s four-year managerial stint at Mary’s Stadium came to an abrupt end in November after the Saints found themselves in the drop zone.

Prior to Hasenhuttl’s exit, Southampton lost six of their last nine league games and a 4-1 home loss to Newcastle United was the final straw.

Frank Lampard – Everton (January 2023)

Following the turn of the new year, Lampard’s poor run of form at Goodison Park saw him booted out on January 23.

Everton were languishing in the 19th spot at that time, with their last Premier League victory dating back to October 22 and their overall result was just three wins from 20 league matches.

Jesse Marsch – Leeds United (February 2023)

Leeds United parted ways with their American coach with the fears of relegation arising as they were on a seven-game winless run.

Marsch was served his sack notice, a day after Leeds United lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on February 5.

Nathan Jones – Southampton (February 2023)

Jones’ adventure in the English top-flight turned out to be a brief stint as Southampton only had him in charge for 14 games, after replacing Hasenhuttl in November.

The former Luton Town manager lost seven of the eight Premier League matches he took charge and the Saints dropped to the bottom of the standing.

Patrick Vieira – Crystal Palace (March 2023)

The former Arsenal captain was dismissed after Crystal Palace failed to win any of their last 12 Premier League outings in 2023.

The Eagles were just three points above the relegation zone when Vieira was dismissed.

Antonio Conte – Tottenham Hotspur (March 2023)

Conte became the fourth manager to leave Spurs in four years, with chairman Daniel Levy showing him the exit door on March 26.

In the lead-up to his dismissal, Conte ranted about Spurs management and the players, before and after matches which apparently did not point to a positive working relationship in North London.

Brendan Rodgers – Leicester City (April 2023)

Leicester City slipped into the relegation zone after a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on April 1 which made the club management run out of patience with Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman was relieved of duties at King Power Stadium after four years in charge.

Graham Potter – Chelsea (April 2023)

Potter’s exit from Stamford Bridge did not come as a surprise with Chelsea struggling for maximum points in the Premier League games.

Since he succeeded Thomas Tuchel in September, Chelsea managed to win just seven of their 22 league matches.

They occupy the 11th spot in the league table with 12 points adrift of the Champions League qualifying spot.
