Napoli’s Osimhen & Atalanta’s Lookman continue Serie A dominance

Super Eagles duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman continued to exert their dominance in the Italian Serie A with their involvement in four goals over the weekend.

Osimhen got Napoli’s second in their 2-0 win over Salernitana, slotting the ball into an empty net after Eljif Elmas’ shot bounced off the post.

The strike was the 24-year-old’s 13th in Serie A this season and the 50th of his career in Europe’s top-five league; 13 for Lille in Ligue 1 and 37 for Napoli.

The Partenopei remain Serie A leaders with 50 points, twelve points ahead of AC Milan in second, to become just the third side in the three-point era to reach 50 or more points in the first half of a Serie A season, after Juventus and Inter Milan.

In Atalanta’s clash against the Old Lady, Lookman netted twice and got an assist in their 3-3 draw, taking his season tally to eleven goals and three assists.

The former Leicester City forward scored his first goal in the fourth minute, beating Wojciech Szczesny at the near post with a fantastic strike.

Lookman turned provider in the second half as Atalanta got the leveller immediately after the restart. He set up Joachim Maehle for the defender’s first goal of the season.

The 25-year-old got La Dea’s third of the game, rising highest to connect to Jeremy Boga’s cross and placed a clinical header past Szczesny.

Although Lookman’s three-goal involvement could not seal the victory for Atalanta due to Danilo’s sublime free kick, his brace made him the fourth Atalanta player to score 10+ goals after just 19 matches in his debut Serie A campaign, after Jorgen Leschly Sorensen, Karl Aage Hansen, and Poul Rasmussen.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are currently fifth with 35 points, just two points behind Roma who occupy the final Champions League spot.

Osimhen and Lookman are Serie A’s top two scorers, and the Nigerian duo will look to continue their chase for the Capocannoniere award in a bid to become the first African player to win the honour.
