2025 Ballon d’Or: Nigeria’s Madugu nominated for best coach award

NFF appoints Justin Madugu as Super Falcons interim head coach

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has been nominated for the Women’s Team Coach of the Year at the 2025 Ballon d’Or, Afrosport reports.

Madugu led Nigeria to a historic outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco last month as they finished the tournament with an unbeaten record.

The 61-year-old ensured the Super Falcons extended their dominance in African football with an unprecedented 10th title after beating hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final.

Madugu will jostle for the honour with four other established managers in the women’s game, with the winner set to receive the Johann Cruyff Trophy. Sarina Weigman, who led England’s Lionesses to triumph at the Women’s European Championship has also been nominated alongside Sonia Bompastor, Arthur Elias and Renee Slegers.

Meanwhile, up for the Men’s Team Coach of the Year Trophy are Enzo Maresa, Luis Enrique, Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick and Arne Slot.

Maresca led Chelsea to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and guided them to lift the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup in a huge successful season for the Blues.

Enrique, on the other hand, won four titles with Paris Saint-Germain, including the French Ligue 1 and Champions League. The trio of Flick, Conte and Slot all won the league in their first season in charge of their respective teams.

The winners of both categories will be announced at the 2025 Ballon d’Or award ceremony scheduled for Monday, 22 September, at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.
